Northern Beaches Volleyball turns 20 and joins in the party
05-Oct-2008 |
| This Sunday, the Northern Beaches Volleyball Association will mark its 20th year of beach volleyball with the first tournament of the summer on Manly Beach. In what promises to be an action packed day of festivities, the tournament will be played to the backdrop of the Manly Jazz festival and as curtain raiser to the NRL grand final celebrations. Players past and present as well as spectators and locals are encouraged to come down and join in the action or simply watch others doing the hard work and enjoy the spectacle. The Northern Beaches Volleyball Association (NBVA) was formed in the summer of 1988 / 89 when the players wore bright fluoros and had big hair. Today, the balls are brighter colours than the playing gear and the hair is a little more sedate, but what hasn't changed is the popularity of the sport and the strength of the beach volleyball community. In the last 20 years Manly beach has become the home of beach volleyball in Australia. Each summer hundreds of players, ranging from social players to professionals, come to Manly from all over Australia and all over the world to be part of the NBVA summer. Sunday's tournament will be the first of 10 NBVA tournaments to be held this summer along with 2 festival events and the ever-popular Social Leagues. NBVA will also host two State Tour Events as well as the Australian National Tour Championships. For more information refer to nbva.org.au |
